Hear from our Belmont East mentor about producer/artist/writer management, gaining experience in multiple areas, and the NY scene.Emily Bines is a producer / writer manager at a company in based in New York called Advanced Alternative Media. She studied Music Business at Belmont University in Nashville, TN and in 2008 she relocated to New York City to work at one of the most prestigious boutique music law firms in the country, Serling Rooks Ferrara McKoy & Worob, LLP. Along with assisting two of the partners at the firm she handled all of the Copyright and Trademark applications for artists including The Zac Brown Band, John Mayer, and The Fray as well as handled the licensing requests and negotiations for
various uses in television, advertisements, movie soundtracks, and video games. After two years at Serling Rooks, she moved to Mom+Pop Records where she worked directly for the president of the label and helped handle all correspondence regarding music-licensing requests for Mom+Pop artists which included Sleigh Bells, Ingrid Michaelson, and Joshua Radin.In January of 2011 she joined the New York based publicity and marketing company The Press House to spearhead the development of their Film and TV Licensing Division, which was launched in March of 2011. She grew the roster to over 50 bands, and 2 catalogues and secured placements on networks such as ABC Family, MTV, Vh1, and campaigns with Eddie Bauer, Fox Head Merch, etc. Her day to day activities included overseeing all aspects of the division including choosing the roster, negotiating the licenses, and creating/maintaining relationships with advertising companies, music supervisors and other influential tastemakers in the Film and TV World.At AAM, some of the clients that Emily looks after are Nashville based producer/writers Neilson Hubbard (The Apache Relay, Matthew Perryman Jones), Dave Cobb (Jamey Johnson, Shooter Jennings, Waylon Jennings), and Aaron Sprinkle (Anberlin, Hawk Nelson, Copeland). She also manages Doug Boehm (Girls, Elliot Smith), John O’Mahony (Metric, Coldplay), Matt Bayles (Minus The Bear, Caspian, Mastodon) amongst others. Along with producer and writer management, AAM works with the UK based record label Communion Records (brainchild of Ben Lovett from Mumford & Sons). Emily helps run all US operations for the label – including their first US release Ben Howard “The Old Pine EP”, Michael Kiwanuka, and the Communion Records New Faces Compilation. Communion started as a live music club night in the UK, and its success allowed for the expansion of Communion Night in the States which Emily helps oversee and curate in New York, Nashville, San Francisco, and soon Chicago.
